Colour Your Palette

Monday 7th to Friday 11th October 2024

This five-day workshop is an in-depth study of colour using Procion MX dyes. In the workshop we will translate colour theory into colour practice. We will deepen our understanding of colour by creating colour references that contain a catalogue of hundreds of different colours, each with their own recipe. A resource that you will use for years to come. Through worked examples we will study different sources of inspiration, extracting colours and developing colour schemes. And we will look at how we can control colour as we use Procion MX dyes to add colour to fabric in a variety of ways.

·         Explore modern colour theory and how it translates into colour practice when using dyes rather than paint.

·         Select a set of eight base colours and start to create a series of colour references that map the colour space created by these colours; that explore the relationship between colour and type of fabric; and that give you the information you need to develop recipes for dyeing fabric based on your colour references.

·         Explore common colour schemes.

·         Develop a set of tools for creating your own colour schemes, including using colour families.

·         Use those tools to work through multiple sources of inspiration, extracting individual colours and, if appropriate, blending those colours to create coherent palettes of colour.

·         Learn how to translate colour schemes into working practices, controlling colour within the confines of the surface design technique you prefer to use.

This workshop is not suitable for students who have no dyeing or printing experience as it assumes knowledge of common dyeing and printing techniques. It is a workshop for colour enthusiasts – those who love dyeing and printing their own fabrics but want greater understanding and control of the colours in their work. There is an element of self-study in this workshop. Some students may decide to spend the majority of their time creating colour references. Others may choose to focus on creating multiple colour studies or to spend the final day screen printing or dyeing fabric based on one of their colour studies.

With a maximum of 6 students you’ll get lots of one to one support from Leah as well as group demonstrations. Included in the cost of the workshop will be ten squeezy bottles for you to use in class and take home afterwards and an acrylic plate for mixing colour. The workshops will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm each day with the studio opening at 9am and closing at 5pm.

The total cost for the course is £475. A £175 fee is payable on booking. The remaining £300 will be payable 6 weeks before the course start date.

The cost includes hot and cold drinks, and a bottomless supply of chocolate biscuits. You will need to provide your own lunch but there is a fridge and microwave in the studio. Most of the materials (except fabric), media and equipment needed for the workshops will be provided. You will be given requirement list but I aim to keep these as short as possible. The studio will be stocked with a selection of the fabrics, Procion dyes, auxiliary chemicals, screen printing screens and more for you to buy so that you can continue your studies at home.

Cancellation policy: This workshop will only run if 4 or more people enrol. If there is a shortfall you will receive a full refund. And you will, of course, receive a full refund if I cancel the course. However please be aware that your deposit will not be refunded if you cancel more than 6 weeks before the workshop unless your place can be filled. If you cancel less than 6 weeks before the workshop you will be liable for the full fee unless your place can be filled.
