Print, Stitch, Go!
In the first half of this fun packed 5-day workshop you will use a variety of screen printing techniques to create a collection of fabrics in a limited colour family. You’ll also exchange dye fat quarters in coordinating colours. In the second half of the week you will use your fabrics to design and stitch a small wall hanging or quilt top. The workshop assumes knowledge of simple cutting and machine piecing techniques but is suitable for students with no previous dyeing or printing experience.
Day 1: Learn about Procion dyes, thickened dyes and how to select and prepare your fabric. Working from a source of inspiration you will pick two colours and use thickened dyes to understand how they will blend together on your fabric. Using your two colours in dark, medium and light values you will learn how to print fabric using screens with temporary masking tape resists.
Day 2: Continue screen printing. Learn how to use sticky back plastic temporary resists to introduce scale to your work. You will also dye 6 fat quarters using a simple exchange dyeing process.
Day 3: Learn how to use thermofax screens with textile inks to add fine detail to one or more of your fabrics. We can use a one to one review, or a class review process to consider your fabrics and to kick start the design process. Start cutting and arranging your fabrics. Sew a quick sample if needed. Consider adding fused elements to add an extra dimension to your work.
Day 4 and 5: Time to sit down and sew! Working at your own pace you’ll stitch together your fabrics. We will consider different quilting designs and, if you have the time, you will layer and start quilting your wall hanging or quilt. You will have fabric left over to use on another project at home. I will demonstrate a range of ways to finish your work.
Each student will have their own 80cm x 180cm height adjustable bench, lots of room to store their fabrics, sewing kit etc. and will have their own space on the studios’ design wall. Most of the materials (except fabric), media and equipment needed for the workshop will be provided. However, you will need to bring your own sewing machine. You will be given requirement list in plenty of time, but I aim to keep these as short as possible.
With a maximum of 6 students you’ll get lots of one to one support from Leah, group demonstrations and detailed class notes. Expect to print 4 – 6 pieces of fabric as well as dye 6 fat quarters. The workshops will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm each day with the studio opening at 8.30am and closing at 5pm.
The total cost for the course is £375. A £125 fee is payable on booking. The remaining £250 will be payable 6 weeks before the course start date.
The cost includes hot and cold drinks, cake and fruit, and a simple lunch each day. Most of the materials (except fabric), media and equipment needed for the workshops will be provided. You will be given requirement list but I aim to keep these as short as possible.
Cancellation policy: This workshop will only run if 4 or more people enrol. If there is a shortfall you will receive a full refund. And you will, of course, receive a full refund if I cancel the course. However please be aware that a refund will not be given in any other circumstances unless your place can be filled.
