Stitched Bindings for Hand Made Books with Ruth Brown

I’m very pleased to announce that textile artist and book binder Ruth Brown will be returning to Urban Studio North in the autumn of 2023 with a workshop focussed on books with stitched bindings. You can find out more about Ruth on her website: Stone Creek Textiles
In this 4 day workshop we will be focussing on making books which feature visible stitched spines. We'll be taking gorgeous papers, lovely fabrics and colourful threads to make:
a book with a buttonhole stitched spine and a folded and cut out card cover
an intriguing, two colour crossed structure binding with a long stitch spine
a delicate French link stitch binding on to tapes with hard covers and stitched end papers
a challenging Greek stitched book which is sewn in two halves, using twin needles. The two halves are then sewn together to create the finished book.
All these books are easily made at home with a minimum of easily sourced equipment.
Please note that the images shown are to illustrate the types of binding only – the details of the books we make during the course may vary.
The workshops will run from 10.00am to 4.00pm each day with the studio opening at 9.30am and will have a maximum class size of 6.
The total cost for the four day workshop is £380. A £180 fee is payable on booking. The remaining £200 will be payable 6 weeks before the workshop start date. There will be a materials fee of £20 payable directly to Ruth.
The cost includes hot and cold drinks and biscuits. You will need to provide your own lunch but there is a fridge and microwave in the studio.
Cancellation policy: This workshop will only run if 4 or more people enrol. If there is a shortfall you will receive a full refund. And you will, of course, receive a full refund if I cancel the course. However please be aware that your deposit will not be refunded if you cancel more than 6 weeks before the workshop unless your place can be filled. If you cancel less than 6 weeks before the workshop you will be liable for the full fee unless your place can be filled.
