Versatility of Felt with Clare Bullock

Monday 20th to Friday 24th May 2024

I meet Clare for the first time when she was demonstrating in The Creative Textile Studio at Festival of Quilts. She is a generous and inspiring teacher. And her wet felted forms are simply gorgeous. Clare has created this five day workshop especially for Urban Studio North and I can’t wait to welcome her into the studio.

You can find out more about Clare here.

Workshop outline

Felt making is like marmite, you either love it or you hate it. This 5 day workshop is designed to make you fall in love with it. Felt is a very versatile fabric, you can make almost anything from it. Clares’ by-line is "If you can think it you can felt it". You are only limited by your imagination.

Each day you will study a different technique and by the end of the five days you will have firm knowledge in felt making.

Day 1 - Basic Wet Felt - Learning the art of blending, recognising wool types and its usage, shrinkage and making fine even basic felt.

Day 2 - 3D Felt - This covers working with a resist and producing seamless items, e.g. pots, pods, vessels and pockets.

Day 3 - Pre-felt - To understand the uses of pre-felt and cover several techniques within this subject (in lay & on lay)

Day 4 - Nuno Felt - Combining fabrics and wool fibres together to produce a sheer fabric in its own right. We will look at a range of different fabrics and how they felt.

Day 5 - On the final day we will look at combining some of these techniques to make a final piece. Here is Clare where will challenge you to use your imagination!

At the end of this workshop you will have a selection of samples and written instructions to guide you on your felting journey.

With a maximum of 6 students you’ll get lots of one to one support from Clare. The workshops will run from 10am to 4pm each day with the studio opening at 9.30am and closing at 4.30pm. A materials fee of £20 will be payable to Clare during the workshop. This covers all the materials you need for the workshop.

The total cost for the course is £475. A deposit of £175 is payable on booking. The remaining £300 will be payable 6 weeks before the course start date. The cost includes hot and cold drinks and biscuits. You will need to provide your own lunch but there is a fridge and microwave in the studio.

Cancellation policy: This workshop will only run if 5 or more people enrol. If there is a shortfall you will receive a full refund. And you will, of course, receive a full refund if I cancel the course. However please be aware that your deposit will not be refunded if you cancel more than 6 weeks before the workshop unless your place can be filled. If you cancel less than 6 weeks before the workshop you will be liable for the full fee unless your place can be filled.
